Ethiopia has revised its estimated 2024/25 gross domestic product upward by 59.2% to $201.42 billion after updating how it measures the economy, according to a government presentation reported by Reuters on 5 November.

The revised accounts were launched on 4 November. They put 2024/25 output at 24.03 trillion birr and 2025/26 output at 31.86 trillion birr, equivalent to $210.7 billion, Ethiopian News Agency reported.

The new base year is 2024/25, replacing 2015/16. Rebasing updates the benchmark and coverage used to calculate GDP. The 59.2% upward revision to the earlier estimate is not an annual real economic growth rate.

The exercise incorporated agricultural and business censuses and household surveys, National Strategy Minister Bereket Fesehatsion said. The government cited digital financial services and other activities previously underrepresented in the accounts.

Reuters said the presentation did not identify the exchange rate used for its dollar figures. That limits direct comparison of the dollar totals across periods, particularly after the birr’s sharp depreciation.

A larger measured economy reduces ratios calculated against GDP, including debt and tax ratios, without itself changing the amounts owed or collected. South Africa also updated fiscal ratios after a GDP revision this week.
