The OADC data centre deal moved closer to completion after regulators cleared Open Access Data Centres (OADC) to acquire a portfolio of NTT data centres in South Africa, according to reports published in recent days. The transaction would expand OADC’s footprint in Africa’s largest data-centre market.

OADC operates hyperscale sites in South Africa and also runs a wider edge network, according to BusinessTechAfrica. As a result, the added facilities could deepen capacity for cloud, content, and enterprise services in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban-linked corridors.

DataCenterDynamics reported that South Africa’s Competition Commission approved the proposed transaction, subject to public-interest conditions cited in local coverage. Meanwhile, Ecofin Agency said the deal covers seven facilities.

The move sits inside a wider push to add African compute close to users. That reduces latency, supports streaming and payments, and can lower cross-border data costs. However, it also raises questions about energy supply, grid stability, and local skills. Therefore, the next phase will likely focus on integration and service continuity.

Market watchers also link the deal to longer-term investment plans. BusinessTechAfrica noted funding and investor backing tied to platform expansion. Even so, operators still face constraints on power, land, and fibre routes. Consequently, approvals are only one step.

Next steps — OADC data centre deal

The parties are expected to complete closing steps and publish timelines for handover. In addition, the buyer will need to confirm operating plans, staffing, and any service upgrades.

Why it matters

Data centres underpin AI, fintech, and e-government. Therefore, the OADC data centre deal signals how fast Africa’s digital infrastructure is consolidating and scaling.
