Senegal AFCON title appeal moved to the forefront of African football governance on Wednesday after Senegal criticised the Confederation of African Football for stripping it of the Africa Cup of Nations title and said it would appeal the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland.

Reuters reported the dispute stems from Senegal’s walk-off protest during the January 18 final against Morocco, triggered by a stoppage-time penalty decision. Senegal returned to the pitch, Morocco missed the penalty, and Senegal won in extra time, but CAF’s appeal board later ruled the walk-off violated tournament rules and awarded Morocco a 3–0 win.

Senegal’s football federation said the ruling was unprecedented and unacceptable. The government separately called for an international investigation into what it described as corruption inside CAF, Reuters reported, adding a political dimension to a sporting dispute.

The row matters because it tests how African football bodies apply tournament rules after matches have been completed and refereeing decisions have been accepted on the field. It also raises questions about governance credibility at a moment when CAF has been trying to build confidence through commercial growth and stronger competition management.
