The African Development Bank Group announced in June 2026 that its board had approved a USD 125 million equity investment in African Trade and Investment Development Insurance, known as ATIDI.

The approval, dated 22 May and disclosed in a 4 June statement, was intended to strengthen ATIDI’s capital base and increase its ability to provide trade-credit and political-risk cover for transactions across African markets.

ATIDI is legally known as the African Trade Insurance Agency. Its insurance products can help investors, exporters and lenders manage selected risks such as non-payment and political disruption, subject to the individual policy’s terms.

The development is significant because a financing decision involves more than the cost of capital. Banks also consider the probability of repayment, foreign-exchange access, security of contracts, dispute resolution and the likelihood of a trading partner meeting obligations.

Credit insurance can make certain transactions easier to structure, but it is not a guarantee that all exporters or project sponsors will be eligible. Coverage has exclusions, pricing and underwriting conditions that must be assessed before a transaction proceeds.

The Bank linked the proposed investment to its ten-year strategy and the wider African Continental Free Trade Area agenda. The intention was to mobilise more private investment and support regional trade where risks have discouraged lenders and commercial partners.

For a manufacturer exporting from one African country to another, dependable payment protection may help secure a larger order or extend credit to a new buyer. However, businesses also need sound contracts, accurate documentation and reliable logistics.

The release documents board approval, rather than proof that all capital was disbursed or that a particular insured trade subsequently closed. Those milestones would require further ATIDI and Bank reporting.
