ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast, December 17, 2024 – The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) has secured approval from its Boards of Directors for the construction of a modern, state-of-the-art headquarters in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire’s commercial capital. This landmark decision underscores the Bank’s commitment to maintaining a strong presence in the region and enhancing the work environment for its staff.
The executive directors of AfDB unanimously supported the proposal, emphasizing the importance of investing in a facility that reflects the Bank’s global stature and supports its workforce’s well-being. Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank Group, described the approval as a historic step for the institution, its staff, Côte d’Ivoire, and Africa as a whole. He highlighted that the new headquarters would symbolize the Bank’s continued growth and success as the continent’s premier financial institution.
“This is a significant moment for the African Development Bank,” said Dr. Adesina. “It marks the fulfillment of a vision I shared when I assumed the presidency in 2015, which was to establish a headquarters building that would be in line with the Bank’s aspirations for a world-class work environment. This investment will not only enhance our operations but also contribute to the development of Africa by improving productivity and ensuring the welfare of our staff.”
The new headquarters will feature advanced facilities that will foster collaboration with shareholders, stakeholders, and partners, aligning with the Bank’s commitment to sustainable and green growth. The building will emphasize energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, and the safety of its occupants, marking a significant step toward achieving the Bank’s broader goals for development in Africa.
Adama Koné, Dean of the AfDB’s Boards of Directors and executive director representing Côte d’Ivoire, presented the approved title deed for the site to Dr. Adesina. The decision was further endorsed by President Alassane Ouattara of Côte d’Ivoire and the government, who have been strong supporters of the Bank’s mission and operations.
“The approval of this project is a clear indication that the African Development Bank is here to stay in Côte d’Ivoire, our home, for the long term,” Dr. Adesina remarked. “We are grateful for the unwavering support of the Ivorian government as we move forward with this important project. It represents a monumental step for the Bank and a shared commitment to Africa’s future development.”
The construction of this modern headquarters will not only provide the Bank with an upgraded facility but also reinforce its ongoing efforts to contribute meaningfully to the development of the continent and enhance its global influence.
