African Medical Centre of Excellence in Abuja: Africa’s New Healthcare Beacon.

Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, now hosts the African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE), a new world-class medical facility poised to transform healthcare in Africa. Developed with an investment of US $300 million by Afreximbank in collaboration with King’s College Hospital London, AMCE represents a powerful effort to counter the annual outflow of $6–10 billion in medical tourism from Africa.

The hospital, backed by public and private stakeholders such as NNPCL and BOI, was inaugurated by key government officials. It offers specialized services in oncology, haematology, cardiology, and general medicine, and also features the region’s largest stem cell and bone marrow treatment unit. With five theaters, catheterisation labs, intensive care, advanced diagnostics, and labs, the facility aims to deliver comprehensive tertiary care.

Beyond its medical mandate, AMCE positions itself as a training and research institution, collaborating with the Christie NHS Foundation Trust and King’s College London. It exemplifies a new healthcare model by integrating patient care, professional development, and medical innovation.

Prof. Benedict Oramah, President of Afreximbank, underscored how the project was inspired by his personal health journey, asserting that local healthcare must be strengthened to save lives and create development impact.

Highlighting Nigeria’s ambition for medical autonomy, Vice President Kashim Shettima stated: “This Centre proves that Africa is ready to compete with the best in global healthcare.” He stressed that it marks a pivot from medical vulnerability to sustainable self-sufficiency.

With plans to expand its capacity including launching a medical school, nursing training, research hubs, and a second 350-bed facility AMCE aspires to train future generations of healthcare professionals across the continent.

AMCE’s launch offers Nigeria and Africa a replicable model for securing healthcare sovereignty. It also reinforces continental aspirations to elevate healthcare standards, invest in medical infrastructure, and reduce reliance on foreign medical systems.
