HARARE, Zimbabwe, January 13, 2025Mukuru, a next-generation financial services platform, has launched the Mukuru Wallet in Zimbabwe, marking a significant milestone in the company’s efforts to enhance financial inclusion across the country. The wallet, which follows Mukuru’s receipt of a Deposit-Taking Microfinance Institution (DTMFI) license from the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, offers a secure and innovative solution for Zimbabwean customers to manage their funds.

With over three million customers already relying on Mukuru’s services in Zimbabwe, the Mukuru Wallet introduces several key features designed to meet the growing demand for accessible digital financial services. The wallet allows users to send and receive money both locally and internationally, store funds securely, and access free cashouts on international transfers. It also provides two distinct pockets for managing funds more efficiently.

Marc Carrie-Wilson, CEO of Send Money Home Zimbabwe, highlighted the significance of the launch: “The Mukuru Wallet is a game-changer for Zimbabwe. We have built a trusted reputation by ensuring cash availability, even in remote areas. With 250 service points across both urban and rural regions, we are now able to reach more people, providing digital solutions like the Mukuru Wallet to underserved communities.”

Doug Tait-Knight, CEO of Mukuru Zimbabwe Financial Services, emphasized the role of the wallet in promoting financial inclusion: “We are leveraging our robust network and technology to provide a solution that allows for affordable domestic transfers and enhanced safety for customers. The wallet also enables customers to conveniently pay for services like electricity, airtime, DSTV bills, and insurance, all from the comfort of their homes.”

Mukuru’s new wallet solution not only targets private individual users but is also set to expand into the business sector. The platform will soon enable organizations to use Mukuru’s capabilities to make payments, distribute funds to farmers, and support small business payrolls. Partners such as Cottco, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), and UNICEF are already collaborating with Mukuru to use its platform for secure and traceable financial transactions.

Kevin Nyakotyo, Mukuru’s Enterprise Sales Manager for Zimbabwe and Zambia, explained how the wallet will benefit large-scale transactions: “In sectors like tobacco and cotton, where payments to farmers are often in large sums, the Mukuru Wallet ensures safety by allowing recipients to access funds as needed, instead of withdrawing large amounts at once.”

With its easy-to-use platform, Mukuru aims to provide peace of mind for both organizations and individuals, offering secure and flexible access to funds whenever and wherever they are needed.
