In a bold move to redefine Africa’s financial services landscape, Network International, a leading enabler of digital commerce across the Middle East and Africa (MEA), has officially launched the first phase of its continent-wide partnership with Airtel Money, the fintech and mobile money arm of Airtel Africa. The rollout begins in Uganda, marking the start of a transformative journey set to ripple across key African markets, including Francophone countries throughout 2025.
The strategic alliance between Network International and Airtel Money is designed to accelerate the availability and sophistication of digital payment solutions across Africa—an essential ingredient for catalyzing economic growth, expanding financial inclusion, and connecting the unbanked to formal financial services.
Under this partnership, Network International will deliver a robust suite of digital infrastructure and managed services, including transaction processing, card management, fraud prevention tools, API sandbox environments, reconciliation and settlement frameworks, and full online access for Airtel customers. The solutions will enable Airtel Money to scale more efficiently while offering seamless, secure, and reliable payment experiences across its footprint.
“We aim to cover significant ground on our Airtel rollouts this year after going live in Uganda and make greater strides for our outsourced payments services in Africa,” said Dr. Reda Helal, Group Managing Director – Processing (Africa) and Co-Head of Group Processing at Network International. “We are excited to add value to Airtel’s capabilities, continue driving the success of Mobile Network Operators, and contribute to financial inclusion across the continent.”
Ian Ferrao, Group CEO of Airtel Money at Airtel Africa PLC, echoed this vision: “We are delighted with this major milestone in our partnership and are eager to keep innovating and elevating our customer experiences with the support of Network’s digital payments expertise. Together, we will pave the way for more citizens to gain access to the continent’s growing digital economy.”
Network International is a critical player in Africa’s fintech and payments evolution. With operations in over 50 countries—including 40+ African markets—the company offers a full range of acquiring, processing, and value-added services to banks, fintechs, merchants, and other financial institutions. Its role in enabling seamless, secure, and scalable payment infrastructure has made it a trusted partner for digital transformation across the MEA region.
Airtel Africa, meanwhile, continues to be one of the continent’s most influential telecommunications and mobile money providers, with operations spanning 14 countries and a rapidly growing base of 140 million subscribers, including over 36 million Airtel Money customers. The company’s mobile money platform plays a vital role in empowering individuals, especially in underserved communities, to access essential financial services.
As mobile connectivity and digital adoption surge across Africa, the partnership between Network and Airtel stands out as a timely and strategic accelerator for digital financial inclusion. By equipping Airtel Money with world-class payment capabilities, the two companies are not only enhancing convenience and safety for end users—they are also laying the groundwork for a more inclusive, cashless economy across the continent.
With Uganda now live, the focus shifts to additional rollouts across Airtel Africa’s operational regions throughout the year. These activations are expected to significantly expand access to modern payment tools for millions more users—bridging gaps between rural and urban communities, informal and formal economies, and analog and digital realities.
