N’DJAMENA, Chad – In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the Chadian and African economies, Professor Benedict Oramah, President and Chairman of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), has been conferred with one of Chad’s highest national honours.

President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno awarded Prof. Oramah the rank of Commander of the National Order of Chad, a distinction administered under the Ministry of Finance, Budget, Economy, Planning, and International Cooperation. This honour reflects a long-standing commitment by Prof. Oramah and Afreximbank to support Chad’s economic stability and transformation, particularly during moments of national uncertainty.

The National Order of Chad is a prestigious state honour awarded to individuals whose service has made a lasting impact on the nation. The Commander rank (Commandeur) is one of the highest levels of recognition, typically reserved for sustained, meaningful contributions to the country’s progress.

Speaking during the award ceremony, President Déby Itno recalled Chad’s turbulent political transition in 2022. At a time when many international financial institutions withdrew their support, he noted, Afreximbank stood firm. “When other international lenders fled at the height of the unfortunate socio-political conflicts, Afreximbank stood firmly behind our country, continuing to push vital investments that now underpin the rapid socioeconomic recovery of our nation,” the President remarked.

The bank’s intervention during this period not only provided a financial lifeline but also boosted confidence in Chad’s long-term recovery. Afreximbank’s efforts included facilitating trade, promoting private sector engagement, and financing critical projects in infrastructure, agriculture, and livestock the backbone of the Chadian economy.

Reacting to the honour, Prof. Oramah stated, “This recognition is not just personal. It represents the unwavering commitment of Afreximbank and its partners to Chad’s development. It is a powerful reminder of what we can achieve together when we refuse to turn our backs in times of difficulty. While I am deeply humbled by this honour, it is also a renewed call to duty.”

Professor Oramah emphasized that Afreximbank remains committed to supporting Chad’s long-term transformation and to playing a pivotal role in fostering inclusive economic growth across Africa. “Our mandate has always been to stand by our member states especially in challenging times. Chad is on a path of renewal, and we are proud to be part of that journey.”

Chad officially became a member of Afreximbank during the 36th African Union Summit. Since then, the Bank has pledged support for strategic development projects that enhance food security, strengthen exports, and enable industrialization. Key areas of intervention include agriculture and livestock development, sectors vital to Chad’s economic diversification efforts.

In the years ahead, Afreximbank intends to deepen its work in Chad through increased investment in trade facilitation, institutional capacity-building, and support for cross-border commerce. The Bank sees Chad as a strategic partner in its broader mission to accelerate intra-African trade and promote resilient, self-sustaining economies across the continent.

The award marks yet another milestone in Prof. Oramah’s leadership journey, highlighting his influence in reshaping Africa’s economic landscape and reinforcing Afreximbank’s reputation as a steadfast partner to governments navigating change.
