Africa CDC’s June Brief Sets Out USD 220.6m in Ebola Response Financing

A June 2026 Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention announcement set out a USD 220.6 million Pandemic Fund financing package for the response to the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak and preparedness in countries at risk. The package was intended to support coordinated work across Central and Eastern Africa.

The Africa CDC statement was dated 5 June and circulated in an 8 June release. It described financing linked to the joint Africa CDC–World Health Organization Continental Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan. It is a financing announcement from that period, rather than an update on current case numbers or present travel requirements.

Africa CDC said up to USD 175.7 million would be mobilised by reprogramming existing projects. The countries identified for that component included the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, Angola, Kenya and Ethiopia.

A further USD 44.9 million was expected through expedited financing processes for Uganda, the Central African Republic and the Republic of Congo. Reprogramming an existing project redirects resources already associated with that project; it is different from a wholly new grant of the same value.

The wider six-month Africa CDC–WHO response plan was described as requiring USD 465 million. Its work covered coordination, surveillance, laboratory testing, infection prevention, clinical care, community engagement, logistics, research and support for essential health services. The USD 220.6 million package was one financing contribution to that broader effort.

For regional health systems, the announcement highlighted the need to fund both immediate response activities and the capacities that connect countries, including laboratories, health workers and cross-border coordination. Country and regional institutions were expected to determine priorities according to identified needs and gaps.

The release did not establish that the full package had already reached implementing teams or that the outbreak had ended. Subsequent disbursements, implementation results and current epidemiological assessments require separate updates. This account focuses on the structure of the June financing decision and the distinction between its components.
