African climate negotiators will press for more funding to help countries adapt to climate change and for fresh pledges to the Green Climate Fund when the United Nations climate conference opens in Antalya, Türkiye, on 9 November.
The African Group of Negotiators wants the talks to advance efforts to triple adaptation finance and replenish the fund, its chair, Nana Dr Antwi-Boasiako Amoah, told a briefing reported by MyJoyOnline on 7 November. Premium Times reported that the group was seeking more grant-based finance and loans on favourable terms.
Adaptation spending helps communities and economies prepare for effects such as drought, floods and rising temperatures. At last year’s talks in Belém, countries called for efforts to at least triple adaptation finance by 2035, according to the adopted decision.
The Green Climate Fund finances both adaptation and work to cut greenhouse gas emissions. The provisional COP31 agenda includes a review of the fund’s financing needs, as well as draft guidance to the separate fund that responds to climate-related loss and damage.
Les UN Economic Commission for Africa also identifies adaptation support, a fair energy transition and participation in carbon markets as regional priorities. The African Union has scheduled a 12 November session on water security and climate finance during the conference, which runs to 20 November.
