Gabon signed agreements with German state-owned energy company SEFE on 3 November covering forest-carbon credits equivalent to about six million tonnes of carbon dioxide, according to a statement from the Gabonese presidency.

Les statement, reported by the state news agency AGP, said the Gabonese Agency for the Development of the Green Economy represented the country. First deliveries are expected by the first quarter of 2027 at the latest.

The presidency described the units as jurisdictional credits eligible for CORSIA, the international aviation carbon-offsetting scheme. Jurisdictional crediting assesses forest-carbon performance over a government-defined area, rather than treating each private project separately.

The public announcement did not disclose a price per tonne or expected revenue, GabonReview reported. The agreements therefore do not establish a disclosed sale value or demonstrate that the full volume has already been delivered.

The presidency said revenue due to the state would be held separately pending the national regulatory framework. That framework is also intended to provide for sharing benefits with communities, while ownership and management of the forests remain with Gabon.

Environmental organisation Brainforest welcomed the agreements on 4 November, but said their success should also be assessed through the effects on people living near the forests. It called for benefit-sharing and governance commitments to be translated into operational arrangements.
