Tanzania has increased the National Food Reserve Agency’s maize purchasing price to TZS500 a kilogramme from TZS450, Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba told Parliament on 5 November.

The TZS50 increase is about 11.1%. The figure concerns NFRA purchases, rather than all maize transactions in the country.

Daily News reported that Nchemba also directed the agency to complete sales procedures promptly when buyers become available, saying delays could send customers to competing markets. Jambo FM separately reported the statement.

He was answering Kongwa MP Isaya Mngurumi Moses on government plans to improve crop prices and find markets. Nchemba said discussions with the agriculture ministry had led to successive increases in the agency’s buying price.

The prime minister said government engagements with foreign leaders were being used to seek export markets. Farmers with maize to sell should visit NFRA’s regional and zonal offices, he said. The reports did not specify a purchasing-window closing date.
