Kenyan investors submitted KSh67.7 billion in bids for KSh28 billion of Treasury bills offered at the 5 November auction, the Central Bank of Kenya reported in its weekly market update.

The bids amounted to 241.8% of the advertised offer, reflecting demand across the 91-day, 182-day and 364-day bills. The central bank’s 6 November bulletin said interest rates on the two longer bill tenors edged lower, while the 91-day yield held at 8.750%.

The 91-day bill attracted about KSh34.5 billion in bids against an KSh8 billion offer. The bank accepted about KSh34.46 billion. The 182-day bill drew KSh21.9 billion, of which KSh7.43 billion was accepted, while the 364-day bill received about KSh11.31 billion and saw about KSh11.24 billion accepted.

The previous day’s reopening of 15-year and 30-year Treasury bonds also drew strong demand: bids totalled KSh99.5 billion against KSh50 billion advertised, or 198.9% of the offer. These subscription ratios describe investor bids, not the amount of new financing ultimately raised.

Kenya’s shilling traded at KSh129.96 to the US dollar on 5 November, unchanged from a week earlier, the bank reported. Official foreign exchange reserves stood at $14.699 billion, equivalent to about 5.9 months of import cover.

In the Nairobi Securities Exchange, the benchmark share indices rose over the week, with the Nairobi All Share Index up 1.68%. The bulletin attributed a sharp rise in turnover and shares traded largely to Nedbank’s acquisition of NCBA shares valued at KSh107.3 billion.
