Africa Finance Corporation said in June 2026 that it had raised a USD 2 billion syndicated loan after increasing the size of the transaction from an initial USD 1.6 billion.
The facility brought together banks from several regions, which AFC described as evidence of broad support for its financing strategy. Its statement assigned 35% of participation to Asia-Pacific banks, 35% to Europe, 25% to the Middle East and 5% to Africa.
A syndicated loan enables multiple financial institutions to lend under an agreed structure. By distributing exposure across participating lenders, the arrangement can provide a borrower with capital at a scale that may be difficult for a single bank to supply.
AFC said the financing would support its capacity to invest in infrastructure and industrial systems, including energy, transport, logistics, manufacturing and technology. The corporation emphasised projects that connect different parts of an economy rather than isolated developments.
At the time of the announcement, AFC also referred to assets above USD 19 billion and membership spanning 48 African countries. These are figures from its June report, not an independent estimate of the corporation’s position in October.
The statement identified Barclays, Commerzbank, First Abu Dhabi Bank and FirstRand through Rand Merchant Bank’s London branch among the global coordinators, alongside a wider syndicate of international lenders.
While access to capital matters, the success of infrastructure finance still depends on project selection, construction costs, operating revenues, currency exposure and the time taken to bring assets into service.
For African businesses, better roads, power networks and industrial facilities may improve competitiveness if projects are delivered and priced sustainably. Loan size alone should not be taken as a measure of completed infrastructure or economic impact.
