On the second day of ACTIF2025 in Grenada, a symbolic tree-planting ceremony honored outgoing Afreximbank President Professor Benedict Oramah. The Flamboyant tree, native to Madagascar and flourishing across the Caribbean, was chosen for its bright red blossoms and symbolism of resilience, peace, and growth.
Grenada’s Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell led the tribute, describing the gesture as both symbolic and deeply meaningful. He praised Oramah’s contributions to shaping Global Africa, stating that his leadership had enabled regions to rise together and secure a shared economic destiny.
Oramah, clearly moved, reflected on the metaphor. As an agricultural economist, he acknowledged the deeper significance of planting a tree, highlighting its long-term presence and value as an anchor. He said he felt rooted in Grenada and CARICOM and pledged his continued commitment to fostering AfriCaribbean growth even after stepping down.
He noted that planting a tree is a duty that doesn’t end with the act itself. It requires tending, harvesting, and protection to ensure it lasts. This, he said, mirrors the relationship between Africa and the Caribbean. It is something that must be nurtured to yield lasting change.
The tree-planting took place as ACTIF2025 carried forward its discussions on trade, innovation, and collaboration. Government leaders, business executives, and civil society representatives continued to explore ways to enhance the integration of Africa and the Caribbean under a shared economic and cultural agenda.
Oramah reiterated his view that Africa remains the cradle of civilization and that giving life through leadership and economic vision should be treated as an act of planting legacy. The Flamboyant tree now stands as a lasting symbol of his work and the unity that leaders hope will define the future of both regions.
