Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, and African Development Bank President, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, will lead the groundbreaking of the Oyo State Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone (SAPZ) in Ijaiye. The project marks the third under Phase I of Nigeria’s SAPZ Program and is the first in the southwest. With $538 million in financing, including contributions from the African Development Bank, Islamic Development Bank, and IFAD, the program aims to boost Agro-industrialization.
Oyo’s location, fertile land, and proximity to Lagos make it ideal for agro-processing. The 300-hectare hub is connected to key infrastructure, including rail, air, and road networks. The zone will focus on cassava, maize, poultry, soybeans, and horticulture. Another 2,800-hectare hub in Eruwa will offer support to youth agripreneurs and smallholder farmers.
This launch represents the shift toward a regionally balanced rural economy. SAPZ Phase II will expand to 24 more states and has already attracted $2.2 billion in interest. The Oyo hub is expected to create jobs, increase exports, and transform Nigeria’s agriculture sector.
