Sudan Peace Push Resumes In Cairo As Egypt and UN Truce

Sudan peace talks returned to Cairo this week as Egyptian officials and the United Nations renewed calls for a nationwide humanitarian truce, aiming to reduce civilian suffering as the war nears its third year.

The talks bring together diplomatic actors seeking to stop fighting between Sudan’s military and the Rapid Support Forces, a conflict that began in April 2023 and has driven mass displacement, hunger, and severe disruption to public services. The renewed push focuses on humanitarian access, safe corridors, and a framework to reduce violence in hotspots where civilians face acute risk.

According to AP, Egypt’s foreign minister reiterated support for Sudan’s territorial unity and rejected any path that legitimises militias, while the UN envoy stressed diplomacy as the preferred route to ending the conflict. The report also cited continued efforts by regional and international actors to expand humanitarian access into areas that have been hard to reach for months.

Recent fighting has intensified in parts of Darfur and other regions, keeping humanitarian agencies under pressure. Aid groups say insecurity and access constraints leave many communities without reliable food, medicine, and protection. Meanwhile, repeated reports of civilian deaths and alleged abuses have deepened international concern, raising the stakes for any credible truce mechanism.

Diplomats said any humanitarian pause would need monitoring and clear commitments from both sides. However, past attempts have struggled due to fragmented command structures, mutual distrust, and shifting frontlines. Therefore, negotiators are likely to pursue incremental agreements first, such as corridor access and time-bound ceasefire windows.

Next steps for Sudan peace talks

Mediators are expected to propose a humanitarian truce framework and press both sides for commitments on aid access and protection of civilians.

Why it matters

Sudan’s war drives displacement across borders and strains regional stability. Therefore, progress in Sudan peace talks affects humanitarian conditions and security across North and East Africa.
