South Africa’s Electoral Commission said on Saturday it planned to declare the results of the 4 November municipal elections on Sunday, 8 November, as it worked through objections and completed the remaining counts.
The commission had received 197 objections by 3 p.m. on Saturday, according to the government news service’s account of the briefing. It had dismissed 54, upheld two and recorded eight withdrawals. The deadline to lodge objections was 5 p.m. on Friday.
Counting was complete in six of the country’s nine provinces. Outstanding areas included Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Emfuleni in Gauteng, Rustenburg in North West, and Msunduzi and eThekwini in KwaZulu-Natal.
Commission chair Mosotho Moepya said results subject to an objection remained provisional pending a decision. The commission’s rulings can affect the allocation of council seats. Early results and turnout figures had been reported separately while counting was underway.
The commission scheduled the declaration for 6 p.m. South African time on Sunday, equivalent to 7 p.m. in Tanzania.
