South Africans voted on 4 November to choose municipal councils, with 29.2 million people registered and 23,696 voting stations available nationwide, according to the Electoral Commission.

The commission’s election-readiness statement said about 188,000 officials had been deployed across the nine provinces. Polling was scheduled from 07:00 to 21:00 South African time, equivalent to 08:00 to 22:00 in Tanzania.

A total of 136,790 candidates were contesting 10,526 council seats, SAnews reported. The contest covers eight metropolitan municipalities, 44 district municipalities and 205 local municipalities, with representatives elected for five years.

Election day followed special voting on 2 and 3 November. SAnews put participation in those two days at 1,425,942 voters; this is a special-vote count, not overall election turnout.

President Cyril Ramaphosa voted alongside Tshepo Motsepe at Hyde Park High School in Johannesburg, according to a separate SAnews report. His comments about strong queues did not provide a national turnout estimate.

Municipal councils oversee services including water, electricity, sanitation, local roads and waste management. Wednesday was declared a public holiday for the election.
