An integration announced by African payments company Kora could make it easier for international airlines and travel agencies to accept payments through mobile money, local bank transfers and cards. Whether passengers see a practical improvement will depend on individual airline adoption and the markets actually supported.
On 12 June 2026, Lagos-based Kora said it had joined the International Air Transport Association’s IATA Financial Gateway (IFG), a system through which airlines manage payment providers and methods. The integration is intended to give airlines and travel companies already using the gateway a route into Kora’s African payments infrastructure without building separate connections for every local payment channel.
Airline payments can be complicated across African markets because national currencies, domestic banking systems, card usage, mobile wallets and settlement arrangements differ. A passenger may have sufficient money in a local account or mobile wallet yet find that an international booking website accepts only a narrow selection of cards. Airlines also face the operational burden of reconciling transactions across multiple providers.
Kora said its IFG participation is designed to support cards, bank transfers, mobile money and other local methods in countries where it operates. It described the arrangement as an infrastructure link, rather than the launch of a new airline or a guarantee that every payment option is already available to every passenger.
That distinction matters for Tanzania and other East African travel markets. Airlines, tour operators and travel agencies may benefit when more customers can pay using familiar domestic channels, but any benefit depends on actual country coverage, transaction costs, foreign-exchange rules, airline integration and the reliability of settlement and refunds.
The release said IATA represented more than 370 airlines globally. That figure describes the association’s membership; it does not establish that all member airlines use IFG or have activated Kora’s services. Kora did not identify the first airlines going live, supply country-by-country launch dates or publish measured savings or payment-acceptance improvements.
For travellers and businesses, the results to watch are straightforward: which airlines introduce new local payment methods, where those methods work, what fees apply, and whether payments and refunds become more dependable. The original announcement was issued by Kora on 12 June 2026; it should not be mistaken for a newly signed agreement in October.
