Tanzania’s NMB Bank has signed a $30 million loan facility with China Development Bank to expand lending to small and medium-sized enterprises. The bank said it would use the funding to support business investment and trade, including firms that do business with China.

The two lenders signed the agreement at NMB’s headquarters in Dar es Salaam, Business Insider Tanzania reported on 5 November. NMB chief executive Ruth Zaipuna said at the signing that limited access to financing made it harder for smaller firms to expand and compete in wider markets.

Tanzania Insight also reported the agreement and said NMB already offered renminbi-denominated business accounts, payments and trade finance. The new facility gives NMB a source of funds for business lending. The accounts and payment services are existing offerings.

The agreement comes after NMB reported group net profit of TZS634.6 billion for the nine months to September, up 16.8% from a year earlier. That reporting period ended before the loan signing.

The reports on the signing did not disclose the facility’s interest rate, repayment term or disbursement timetable. They also did not specify the terms NMB would offer individual businesses.
