Tanzania Fuel Prices April 2026 Rise As Pump Costs Hit

Tanzania fuel prices April 2026 remain a high-search public cost issue after new mainland cap prices took effect from 1 April. The change matters now because transporters, food traders, commuters and fuel-dependent SMEs are already adjusting operating costs across Dar es Salaam, Tanga, Mtwara and inland markets.

The Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority lists the April petroleum cap prices as effective from Wednesday, 1 April 2026. Its petroleum pricing system covers petrol, diesel and kerosene on wholesale and retail terms, with prices computed from Dar es Salaam, Tanga and Mtwara ports.

The sharpest public attention has focused on Dar es Salaam. Reported retail figures show petrol at TZS 3,820 per litre, up from TZS 2,864 in March, a rise of 33.4%. Diesel moved to TZS 3,806 from TZS 2,858, while kerosene rose to TZS 3,684 from TZS 2,932.

Here is what the new fuel price means for transport costs and food inflation. Higher diesel prices feed into buses, trucks, fishing boats, generators and delivery fleets. In Tanzania, diesel also affects wholesale food movement from production zones to city markets.

The regional link is clear. Fuel prices have also risen in Ghana, Malawi, Kenya and other import-dependent economies as global supply pressures feed into African pump prices. African countries import most petroleum products, making them exposed when international product prices, freight, foreign exchange and supply routes shift together.

Tanzania fuel prices April 2026: What changes for businesses and households

Households will feel the change first through commuter fares, cooking-energy substitution and food prices. SMEs will feel it through delivery charges, backup-power costs, farm transport and margins on fast-moving goods. Operators with thin cash flow may reduce trips, raise prices or delay non-essential movement.

For government and regulators, the immediate operational issue is price discipline. EWURA publishes maximum cap prices, meaning the public can compare station prices with the official ceiling. The authority also says cap prices are published monthly, which makes the next pricing round a key inflation signal for May.
