South Africa’s wholesale diesel prices will fall by about R1.10 to R1.20 a litre from 4 November, while both regulated petrol grades will decline by just one cent, following temporary fuel-levy cuts.

The government’s 3 November announcement gives decreases of 109.82 cents a litre for diesel with 0.05% sulphur and 119.82 cents for the 0.005% grade. Petrol 93 and 95 will each fall by one cent a litre. The diesel adjustments are wholesale changes, not a uniform pump price at every filling station.

The levy reductions are R3 a litre for diesel and R1.50 for petrol between 4 November and 1 December, Reuters reported. Smaller reductions are due to remain in place until 5 January.

The cuts come despite increases in underlying import costs. The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources said average Brent crude rose from $101 to $108 a barrel during the review period, while the rand weakened from R16.21 to R16.55 to the US dollar.

Other fuels will become more expensive. The department announced a R2.75-a-litre increase for wholesale illuminating paraffin and a R1.83-a-kilogram rise in the maximum retail price of liquefied petroleum gas, increasing to R2.08 a kilogram in the Western Cape.
